SHOWTIME HOUSE

New York | 2009

As part of Showtime’s marketing campaign for its 2009 season, studioMDA was invited to create an interior inspired by Californication and its central character, Hank Moody. The design translates the show’s themes of pleasure, fantasy, and excess into a provocative bedroom where the boundaries between desire and reality become deliberately blurred.

Drawing inspiration from artists including Nan Goldin, Malcolm McLaren, and Helmut Newton, studioMDA conceived the space as an exploration of fantasy, eroticism, and private desire. At its center is a custom lacquered platform bed paired with Positions, a mirrored ceiling installation composed of multiple planes of Plexiglas set at varying angles. Their interplay creates shifting reflections that give the room a sense of movement, luminosity, and weightlessness.

studioMDA also designed a series of custom elements for the show house, including a Swarovski crystal light fixture in the hallway, extending the immersive character of the installation beyond the bedroom.
