50 Artists, 50 Years: Marian Goodman Gallery Opens a New Chapter - NEW YORK TIMES

Now the neighborhood is one of the city’s richest residential districts and hosts its most vibrant cluster of commercial art galleries — a status that the arrival of Marian Goodman cements. Though it’s a five-story, 19th-century warehouse tower of classic downtown Manhattan cast iron, its multimillion-dollar renovation by studioMDA is restrained. Walls are white, ceiling beams are black, and unlike some of its Chelsea peers, this is a gallery building that never feels like a spa or corporate headquarters. What it does feel like is the end of an era — and, with any luck, the beginning of a new one.

His ‘Soft White Cube’ Is Conquering TriBeCa - NEW YORK TIMES

Dochantschi has cultivated a loyal following by gradually weaning the art world off its addiction to harsh lighting, frosted windows and architecture that intimidates people rather than welcoming them. He is best known for the 2021 renovation of the Phillips auction house at 432 Park Avenue, where he dropped the main concourse into the basement and upset the classic image of a “behind closed doors” auction with large windows that allowed the public to watch sales from the street.

His philosophy of what he calls the “soft white cube” has grown popular in TriBeCa, where he is the unofficial planner of New York City’s new arts district growing between Walker Street and White Street, some 50 galleries strong, according to neighborhood real estate brokers.

Prints Make Themselves Seen (and Heard) Again - NEW YORK TIMES

Art experts can agree on one point: that the definition of a print is continuing to expand and change. And nowhere is this more evident than at the former International Print Center New York, which, after temporarily closing in March, reopened on Oct. 8 in a new ground-floor space with a shorter name (just Print Center New York) and a broader mission.

“We’re doubling our exhibition space and tripling our wall space,” Judy Hecker, the center’s executive director, said during a tour in September of the unfinished premises. Designed by studioMDA in Manhattan, the 4,100-square-foot nonprofit Print Center, at 535 West 24th Street in Chelsea, functions more like a museum than a gallery, offering exhibitions, informational resources and multiple programs for the public and artists. Admission is also free.

A Window unto Technological Innovations - WORLD-ARCHITECTS

“the epicenter of the surrounding academic community”

The Center was designed by studioMDA, the New York office founded by Markus Dochantschi in 2002. In Aachen, the task was more mundane than in New York, since academic buildings need a certain robustness to survive generations of students, with their posters, graffiti, dirty shoes, and chewing gum. Still, Dochantschi managed to give his black-and-white building a dose of American elegance: “Fluid dynamics shape the building — in order to maximize the fresh air corridor for the city of Aachen.”
