LUHRING AUGUSTINE GALLERY

New York | 2020

Luhring Augustine has opened its new gallery space designed by studio MDA in Tribeca at 17 White Street. The inaugural exhibition presents the first U.S. solo show of the late London-based, Brazilian-born artist Lucia Nogueira.

The gallery occupies a historic Tribeca building featuring a 16’ ceiling for the main exhibition space and a viewing room. studioMDA’s renovation of the 3,500 sq. ft. space embraces its existing character, featuring a tin ceiling and a main corridor made up of Corinthian columns. A skylight spanning the entire width of the main gallery illuminates the space. Upon entering the gallery, visitors are pulled through the central corridor into the wide- open, high-ceilinged exhibition space. The gallery’s lighting system includes alternating tracks for spotlights and ambient sources. Light wooden floors, white-painted cast iron columns, and the translucent glass of the skylight complete the pared-down material palette.

Having worked within Tribeca’s developing art scene on Bortolami Gallery and Andrew Kreps Gallery, Luhring Augustine is the third addition to studioMDA’s design portfolio in the neighborhood.
