ESTHER SCHIPPER GALLERY - SEOUL, KOREA

After a successful two years in their first Seoul location, Esther Schipper has outgrown their previous studioMDA-designed space and will occupy a four-story building at 24 Hannam-daero, 46-gil in the centrally located Yongsan district. studioMDA transformed the entire 2,000 square foot building into a state of the art, multilevel gallery space, which opened to the public February 25th.

Esther Schipper's new location features a ground floor entrance with two street-visible vitrines. The second floor features a welcome desk and main gallery, with another full-floor gallery on the third level. In keeping with Esther Schipper’s previous Seoul location, gallery spaces feature ERCO lighting and light gray floors. The fourth floor of Esther Schipper’s new home is devoted to communal office space, awash with natural light from a fourth-floor balcony and rooftop terrace.

studioMDA has maintained a sculptural, winding staircase which cuts through all four stories of the building, allowing the gentle diffusion of light from above. It has been refinished to match the gallery walls, providing a functional gallery space that balances architectural intrigue with a muted color palette, directing attention to the art. The cut throughs produce an expansive, multistory section of wall, fit for large installations.
