DAVID NOLAN GALLERY
New York | 2008
David Nolan Gallery, located in the heart of Chelsea, was completed in 2008. This four-story black and gray building houses a contemporary art gallery on all three floors, and viewing rooms on the first floor. The mezzanine provides an opening to the main gallery and the showroom on the ground floor. The first floor facade is the result of a collaboration between studioMDA’s design team and the sculptor Richard Artschwager.
The facade is articulated with Artschwager’s signature mid-cadmium yellow frames. Above the windows and doors are transoms of mirrored glass – reflecting the street scape, viewers and the sky of Chelsea. The facade is referent to Arschwager’s views on material utility and inconsistency. The design couples symmetry with reflectivity – challenging the expectations of what is solid vs. void.
