Brancusi in New York 1913-2013 celebrated the 100th anniversary of the sculptor’s first works in the city, displayed at the Park Avenue Armory. Credited with “introduc[ing] three of the decisive inventions in sculpture of the twentieth century: environmental sculpture, minimalist sculpture, and serial sculpture,” the artist found ardent supporters in an American audience, particularly in New York. The exhibition design created a dialogue between scale and perception, inviting viewers to experience the non-linear geometry of the sculptures within the linear pattern of the exhibition layout, which is modeled after the Manhattan grid. Limestone pedestals, upon which the bronze sculptures are placed, effect the rigidity of form and materiality found throughout the city.
