BEVERLY PEPPER COR-TEN

MARLBOROUGH GALLERY

New York | 2019

Beverly Pepper: Cor-Ten showcased six recent, monumental works in steel by the celebrated sculptor. Beverly Pepper was the first artist invited to work with Cor-Ten, a trademarked steel alloy from US Steel, in 1964. The material, which gains a rich orange hue when oxidized, is best known from Richard Serra’s massive sculptural instillations, dating from the 1970s until his death. The playful exhibition design features AstroTurf carpeting, confusing interior and exterior space and highlighting the sculptures’ versatility. The rich, synthetic green contrasts and accentuates the sculptures’ textured patina and earthy tones. The choice brightens the space and provides a modest dose of humor, enlivening the sculptures and relaxing visitors. Beverly Pepper’s large-scale, meticulously produced sculptures begin with spontaneous drawing—this sense of freedom and ease is never lost.
