ALEXANDER GRAY GALLERY
After 17 years in Chelsea, Alexander Gray Gallery relocated to a new, expansive space at Tribeca in 2024, joining a growing number of galleries making the move to the area. The 7,500-square-foot space underwent a comprehensive renovation, blending historic preservation with contemporary functionality.
The design focuses on preserving the building’s historic elements both inside and out. The main facade on Broadway was thoughtfully intervened by shifting the original main entrance to the southeast bay and replacing the main bay with a window matching the existing ones. The main exhibition area features three bays that recreate a skylight effect through specialized lighting, with ceiling heights soaring over 15 feet, accommodating a wide range of artworks and exhibitions. A key objective of the renovation was to retain the "Raumgefühl"—the sense of space—of the original building while creating a well-proportioned gallery area suited for contemporary art.
The project also includes two viewing rooms, open and private offices as well as two large storages and one staging area. The new space runs from Broadway all the way back to Cortlandt Alley where a new skylight and windows were installed to bring light into the office areas. The original railing has been preserved and reused, while the wood flooring has been locally sourced from Upstate New York.
